The Japan Prize was founded in 1983 to honor scientists and researchers worldwide who are recognized for having contributed significantly to the peace and prosperity of humankind through their original and outstanding achievements that have greatly advanced the progress of science and technology. Our founder, Konosuke Matsushita, made great efforts to help found the prize, including donating his own private funds, and also served as the first chairperson of the foundation.

There were three recipients this year: Professor Sir Brian J. Hoskins (United Kingdom) and Professor John Michael Wallace (United States) in the fields of resources, energy, the environment, and social infrastructure, and Professor Ronald M. Evans (United States) in the fields of medical science and pharmaceutical science. The recipients (laureates) are decided through a strict judging process covering approximately a year, with recommendations from some 15,500 experts both in Japan and abroad.
