Indonesia: Contribution to Enhanced Nighttime Safety on the Island by Donating Solar Panel Systems for Public Street Lights

On January 24, 2026, PT Panasonic Industrial Devices Batam (PIDSG-BT) donated 12 solar panel systems for public street lighting on Panjang Island, which is located in the Galang area of Batam City, Indonesia. This initiative is part of a long-term village development program that has been underway since 2023, conducted in collaboration with the Mechanical Student Association (HMM) of vocational and technical schools in Batam, a higher education institution. The program aims to support rural development and improve the quality of life within local communities.
Panjang Island faces limited access to electricity, available mainly between 6:00 PM and 11:00 PM. Power is supplied by a community-managed diesel generator, with fuel costs covered by residents' contributions. However, shortages of funds and fuel sometimes lead to power outages even during the evening. The limited supply is prioritized for basic household lighting and does not extend to public infrastructure such as street lights, resulting in dark roads after sunset and raising concerns about residents' safety.

For this donation, HMM students assembled the solar panel systems, providing valuable hands-on experience for future engineers. The installation of solar-powered public street lights has significantly improved nighttime visibility and contributed to creating a safer living environment through enhanced public lighting infrastructure.
