Presentation on Solar Lantern Donations to Off-Grid Areas at TICAD 9 Side Event
On August 20, a seminar titled "Roles of Japanese advanced technologies, know-how and institutional innovations in improving food nutrition security and livelihoods in African countries" was held as one of the side events of the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9) at Pacifico Yokohama.
Panasonic Holdings' Technology Division participated in the seminar alongside organizations such as the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), World Vision Japan, and Ajinomoto, introducing two of Panasonic's key initiatives.
The first initiative presented was "LIGHT UP THE FUTURE," a support program for off-grid areas that has been ongoing since 2013. In Africa, approximately 40% of the population still lives in areas without electricity*.
The presentation, which included video footage, explained how this initiative to provide solar lanterns has contributed to creating opportunities for education, health, and increased income.
The initiative has attracted strong interest from international organizations such as the United Nations.

As an example of collaboration with external partners, the presentation highlighted a joint project in Kenya conducted with World Vision Japan.
The second initiative introduced was "Novitek," a plant growth stimulant that utilizes carbon dioxide (CO₂) to enhance agricultural productivity. The liquid produced by cyanobacteria through CO₂ absorption stimulates
plant growth, leading to increased yields and improved crop quality. The potential application of this technology in African regions garnered significant interest from attendees.
