On May 30, the Panasonic Education Foundation held the 51st Practical Research Grants Awards Ceremony and Startup Seminar. Approximately 140 participants including representatives from the Ministry of Education, grant recipients, selection committee members, and educational technology researchers, joined the event either in person in  Tokyo or online.

The Practical Research Grant program, launched in 1975, is one of its flagship program and supports hands-on research aimed at improving challenges in educational settings through the use of ICT. This year, 70 projects were selected from 231 applications. To date, the foundation has supported approximately 3,600 projects, representing nearly 10% of all primary and secondary education institutions across Japan.

During the ceremony, Mr.  Terashima from the Ministry of Education's Elementary and Secondary Education Bureau delivered a keynote speech on Japan's "GIGA School Initiative," which aims to provide one digital device per student. He  also offered a clear overview of the ongoing discussions surrounding the upcoming revision of the national curriculum guidelines.

The Startup Seminar featured breakout discussions among grant recipients and expert advisors, grouped by research themes and school types. One of the topics was the use of generative AI in educational settings.
