Exhibition overview
In the latter half of his life, Le Corbusier (1887–1965) coined the term “Synthesis of the Arts” to articulate his ambition to unify painting and sculpture under the aegis of architecture. Yet beyond that, “Synthesis of the Arts” also served as a slogan for the entirety of his artistic vision, which was guided by idealistic principles of unity, harmony, and universal laws.
While globally renowned as an architect, Le Corbusier was also a profound innovator across all visual arts. The exhibition “Le Corbusier: Synthesis of the Arts 1930–1965” spotlights his paintings, sculptures, drawings, and tapestries from the 1930s onward, as well as his artistic use of emerging technologies. Contextualizing these alongside architectural projects, the exhibition illustrates how Le Corbusier's mature artistic vision transcended traditional boundaries.
The optimistic and joyful nature of Le Corbusier's mature œuvre offers visitors a fresh perspective on an artist often associated with the concept of the house as “a machine for living in.” By juxtaposing his works with those of contemporaries like Fernand Léger, Jean Arp, and Wassily Kandinsky, Le Corbusier's art is further contextualized within the cultural milieu of his time.
Curated by German art historian Robert Woitschützke, this exhibition offers an insightful exploration of one of the 20th century's most visionary minds.
