新年明けましておめでとうございます。

埼玉パナソニックワイルドナイツは、リーグワンの開幕から３連勝を達成し、エキサイティングなシーズンのスタートを切る事ができました。

新年の幕開けは、人生やスポーツにおいて大切なことを思い出させてくれる特別な時間です。この時期に身の回りのかけがえのないものに感謝し、共に新しい年を迎えましょう。

まずは普段から公私両面でかけがえのないサポートをしてくださっている家族への感謝、そして、私たちからはワイルドナイツのラグビーを応援し支えてくださるファンの皆様にも、この場を借りて心から感謝を申し上げます。
皆様はワイルドナイツのラグビーファミリーを構成する大切な一員です。

昨シーズンからの変化では、笹倉 康誉、戸室 達貴、床田 裕亮、浅沼 樹羅、セミシ トゥポウ、マノア ラトゥがチームを離れ、新たにオッキー バーナードとゼイビア スタワーズが仲間に加わりました。
ダミアン デアレンデは、ラグビーワールドカップ2019に続き、2023大会にて連覇を達成しました。

この様な変化を経た私たちが現在戦っているNTTジャパンラグビーリーグワン2023-24は、これまでで最も厳しいシーズンになることが予想されています。私たちは、優勝を目指す過程の中で試練が待ち受けていることを理解しており、ラグビーの素晴らしさである不確実性を受け入れて、試練を乗り越えるためのスキルはもちろんのこと、チーム一体となるための相互理解やプレー中の一瞬の判断を磨くことにこだわって活動しています。

私が普段から選手達に大事にして欲しい習慣として説いているのは、失敗した時やチャンスを逃した時に引き摺らないことです。ラグビーはダイナミックなゲームであり、起こった出来事そのものよりも、出来事に対する反応の方が重要です。起こった出来事に対して適切な対処ができるのか、対処するための準備ができているのかを常に問いかけています。
私たちの練習では、試合で起きるであろう事象に対して、冷静に対処できるように日々の練習を行っています。時間や空間、フィジカルなど、様々なプレッシャーを考慮しながらトレーニングをデザインする事で、試合の最も重要な場面においてもチームとしてのパフォーマンスを発揮できるように準備しています。

今年はTHE CROSS-BORDER RUGBY 2024が予定されており、2月4日(日)にはニュージーランドのスーパーラグビーチーム、ギャラガーチーフスと対戦します。チーフスは2023年のスーパーラグビーでリーグ戦１位の最高成績を収めましたが、決勝戦で私の前所属先であるクルセイダーズに敗れました。
チーフスの状況は昨シーズンのリーグワン決勝戦でクボタスピアーズ船橋・東京ベイに敗れた私たちの経験と似ておりますので、様々な側面から興味深い一戦になることでしょう。

Welcome to a New Year.

The Saitama Panasonic Wild Knights are underway with the prospect of an exciting year ahead. The dawn of the New Year reminds us of what is important in sport and life.
It is appropriate at this time of year to consider the many things that we value and are grateful for.

Firstly, it is a time to be thankful for our own families. We hope that you get an opportunity to stop, enjoy and celebrate the company of your loved ones.

Secondly, we would like to thank you for your ongoing support of your rugby family the Saitama Wild Knights.

Your interest in what we do is greatly appreciated, you are an important part of our team.
We are excited for the possibilities that a new season presents. Some of that excitement can be attributed to the fact that there are no guarantees.

No two campaigns are the same; every year sees an evolution of the playing group just as our opposition evolve.

A number of long time servants have moved on to the next chapter in their lives.
Players who have moved on to life after rugby include: Yusuke Tokota, Ryusei Kawasaki, Jyura Asanum, Tasuki Tomuro, Yasutaka Sasakura and Manoa Latu while Semisi Tupou (Ricoh) has been released to continue playing.

New entrants to the group include Xavier Stowers from Australia and Ockie Barnard from South Africa.

Congratulations are due to Damian de Allende and Lood de Jager who were members of the back to back RWC Champions South African squad in 2023.

The 2024 League One will be the toughest competition to date. We know we will be well tested along the way and embrace the ‘uncertainty’ as a big part of the appeal of this great game. We know that we will need each other to overcome those challenges and have been working hard on developing our collectively owned understanding and instincts; not to mention skills. It is one thing to have an idea but significantly harder to make it work when you have a capable opponent doing their best to stop every initiative you take.

One of the hardest habits to learn as a player is not to dwell on an error or missed opportunity. Rugby is such a dynamic game that in many ways the response to what happens is often more important than the event itself. This is certainly how we attempt to prepare for the occasion. The philosophy behind our preparation is to train in a way that makes our in-game experience easier. Manipulating the variables of time, space and physical resistance in training such that we are able to perform as a team when it matters most in-game.

Our schedule this year includes a fixture against the Chiefs Super Rugby team from New Zealand on February 3rd as part of a ‘cross border rugby’ initiative.
The Chiefs were the best performed team in Super Rugby in 2023 but were beaten in the Final by the Crusaders (my former team). Their campaign was similar to our experience of losing to Kubota in the Final. This will be a fascinating encounter for many reasons.

We look forward to your continued, enthusiastic support at Kumagaya Stadium and hope you enjoy what you see.
