Exhibition Overview
The multi-talented and prolific Tsurutaro Kataoka is known not only as an actor, but also as a painter and artist. We feature his work for the first time in an exhibition themed around the four seasons.
Tsurutaro Kataoka has been involved in the world of art for nearly 20 years. He has long been creating ambitious works with ceramics, glassware, dyes, and other media. This year, he received the 10th Tejima Yukei Prize, considered the most prestigious prize in the field of calligraphy, and he continues to be a creative force as he approaches his 60th birthday.
This exhibition features about 90 of his works, including Shikisaika (Flowers of the four seasons), a 3-meter tall series created specially for the show; the Tejima Yukei Prize-winning work, Yoru (Night); and other pieces that express the beauty of Japan’s four seasons.
The exhibition features state-of-the-art technology developed by Panasonic to present the world of Tsurutaro Kataoka like it has never been seen before. The Space Player, for example, combines lighting and image projection to give movement to motifs such as detailed flower petals and small animals—as if they were actually alive.
The exhibition space was designed by the WOW design studio, which has offices in Tokyo, Sendai, and London. In addition to the Space Players, a range of video and lighting equipment—including high-definition TVs featuring cutting-edge 4K resolution—are used to create an entirely new dream world in which to experience Kataoka’s work.
