Panasonic's PLC Technology Ratified in the IEEE1901 Standard

Following the approval by the IEEE Standard Association, Panasonic will continue to promote the widespread adoption of PLC as a worldwide standard.

Osaka, Japan -The PLC (power line communication) technology jointly proposed by Panasonic Co., Ltd. and its subsidiary, Panasonic System Networks Co., Ltd. has been approved by the IEEE Standard Association1 as the base technology in the IEEE1901 standard. The IEEE1901 standard documents will be released in the beginning of 2011.

Additionally, the technology allowing Panasonic's PLC technology to coexist with other PLC technologies-proposed by the two companies in conjunction with CEPCA2-was included as part of the approval. Prior to its approval by the IEEE1901, this coexistence technology was approved in June of this year for ITU-T G.99723.

The approved technology, Wavelet OFDM4, is used in products that adopt Panasonic's HD-PLC3 high-speed power line communication technology. This technology features the environmentally friendly characteristic to realize lower power consumption and lower costs through highly efficient data transmission.

Panasonic has already completed the development and licensing of the technology used as the basis for the approved IEEE1901 standard. Panasonic will continue working through organizations such as the HD-PLC Alliance5 to ensure the interoperability of devices that adhere to the IEEE1901 standard, and it will also promote the widespread adoption of PLC as a worldwide standard.

1. IEEE Standard Association: The IEEE Standards Association, a globally recognized standards-setting body within the IEEE, develops consensus standards through an open process that engages industry and brings together a broad stakeholder community. IEEE standards set specifications and best practices based on current scientific and technological knowledge. The IEEE-SA has a portfolio of over 900 active standards and more than 600 standards under development. For information on the IEEE-SA, see: http://standards.ieee.org.
2. CEPCA (Consumer Electronics Powerline Communication Alliance): A nonprofit organization established to create a standard for interconnecting devices on a home network through high-speed power line communication
3. ITU-T G.9972: "Coexistence mechanism for wireline home networking transceivers". This standard defines the coexistence protocol among the different PLC systems. The PLC systems are IEEE1901 and ITU-T G.9960/G.9961.
4. Wavelet OFDM: A proprietary technique developed by Panasonic. Wavelet OFDM uses OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) to achieve efficient high-speed data transmission by applying wavelet conversions orthogonally to each subcarrier. Wavelet OFDM reduces the side-lobe level of each subcarrier with no redundant signals as a result of setting the orthogonality of the wave-frequency domain and time domain.
5. HD-PLC: The name of a high-speed power line communication system created by Panasonic Corporation. HD-PLC is a trademark or registered trademark in Japan and other countries.
