TOMY and Panasonic Collaborate in Road Testing CNG-Powered Long-Haul, Heavy-Duty Truck

Osaka, Japan - Panasonic Corporation and TOMY Company, Ltd. today announced the results of six-month on-road trials of a long-haul, heavy-duty truck which was fueled with compressed natural gas (CNG). In the trials, the first in Japan, the two companies partnered to complete 48 round trips between the Osaka and Tokyo areas from April through September this year using the prototype truck that was developed as part of the Next-Generation Low-Emission Vehicle Development Project organized by the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. The tests yielded positive results: a 10 percent reduction in CO2 emissions and a 90 percent reduction in NOx emissions, compared to performance of conventional diesel trucks. Virtually no suspended particulates were emitted.

Approximately 37,000 low-pollution CNG vehicles are already in use in Japan, replacing oil-fuelled vehicles. Around 17,000 of them are trucks, mainly with a loading capacity of two tons. In terms of long-haul, heavy-duty CNG-fueled trucks, the prototype truck used in the tests is the only one now in public road trials in Japan. The truck has achieved high power output as well as low emissions and high fuel economy and is capable of travelling over 600 km on a single tank of fuel. It has shown promise as a next-generation low-emission alternative for heavy-duty diesel trucks to reduce the environmental impact from ground transportation.

In product transport, Panasonic and TOMY use the same routes in some areas. In the round-trip trials, Panasonic shipped VIERA flat-panel televisions from its plant in Osaka to its distribution center in Urayasu City on the outskirts of Tokyo on the eastbound leg. On the westbound leg, TOMY shipped toys and other products from its distribution center in Urayasu to customers in the Osaka area. The two companies plan to carry out 250 round-trips together in the current fiscal year ending March 2010 (FY 2010), using conventional and the CNG-fueled trucks. Of these, 96 trips involve the CNG truck. Such partnership will enable them to eliminate 7,600 km of empty running during FY 2010. They estimate that this elimination and the use of the CNG truck will lead to an 18-ton reduction in CO2 emissions in FY 2010.

Capitalizing on the proximity of their distribution bases, Panasonic and TOMY will further their cross-industrial collaboration in transport, such as expansion of the round-trip transport and product combination, to optimize transportation efficiency and reduce environmental impact. When the CNG truck is released in the market, the two companies will actively introduce the environmentally friendly vehicle in their fleet of heavy-duty trucks.
