USA: Panasonic Corporation of North America hosted the New Jersey Network of Superintendents
January 12, 2011
In December 2010, Panasonic Corporation of North America headquarters in Secaucus hosted the New Jersey Network of Superintendents, a group of school district leaders that meets regularly under the guidance and support of The Panasonic Foundation. As part of an effort to improve equity in student achievement, the 12 participating superintendents had identified groups of students who are not performing as well in their schools in comparison to the other students. Examples of these groupings of lower achieving students include students with special needs, students in poverty, and racial minorities.
The superintendents told their stories, using data and graphics to portray the inequities in student achievement that they are working to overcome. In small groups of three or four, they explained their challenges to one another, responded to questions, and generated ideas for moving forward. Comments at the conclusion of the day, included the following: "The power of seeing the pictorial representations of data was extraordinary!" "The similarity in the items selected from the various districts came as a surprise, as many of us come from communities that look quite different." "The need and power of superintendents to challenge inequities smacked me in the face today!"
This is an ongoing project that will be further pursued and refined in the coming months.
