Thailand: Panasonic Education Support Fund (2010-2012)
February 17, 2011
The Panasonic Education Support Fund Project has been successfully achieved for three years since 2007 as lunch support fund for elementary school students in the grass root of Thai society. Today, though we are still thinking about lunch support fund to give to those children, we are also considering about the significant of reading as it is the basis of knowledge and knowledge is referred as “treasure” which can not be stolen. According to a report in 2003 by National Statistical Office (NSO) that 40% of Thai people do not read book, and average Thai people read only 7 lines a year. From the matter of fact, the problem of reading raised because those Thai children do not have opportunity to read, also there is not enough reading material provided at school, especially for children in the grass root of Thai society. We believe that education cannot be found only in text book and there are many
interesting books which can attract children's attention, such as, encyclopedia for kids, and other instructional media like CD-ROM, VCD/DVD. Thus, it should be a great opportunity for Panasonic to provide knowledge to children at school, where they spend most of their time in, so that they will grow up and become fond of reading. Moreover, providing knowledge to children may affect the country's development in the long run, which is called “sustainable development”.
In January 19-21, Panasonic Group in Thailand employees went to four elementary schools in
two provinces in the central part of Thailand, Ratchaburi and Kanchanaburi. During the three-day project, we
not only donated 750 books, 160 CD-ROM and VCD, 4 32” LCD TV, 4 mini home theater, 8 electrical fan to fulfill in each school's library but children also had
a chance to learn about environment from our employees, for example, global warming, how to save energy from using electrical products and 3R. The learning was a part of one of environmental functional group's important projects his year which is “Panasonic Global Eco Learning Project”. We believe that after this project, children would learn a great deal of how to save energy in their life together with living together with the nature in harmony. And with all the books, educational materials and products we gave to them, they will grow up to be well-educated adults in the future.
